Macrophage ElastaseMacrophage Elastase

Macrophage elastase (MPP-12) is an enzyme mainly expressed in alveolar macrophages in homo sapiens. It gives rise to emphysema by degrading elastin and by deactivating alpha1-proteinase inhibitor (alpha1-PI). The crystal structure of the enzyme was determined by X-ray shows a active-site cleft. The red structures indicate where the hydrophobic residues are located. The enzyme has two shown in purple.
