Bone morphogenetic protein

Function

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) are growth factors which can induce formation of bone and cartllage'[1]. Over 20 BMPs are known at present. BMP is part of the Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGF-β) family of proteins. For details on BMP-2 see Student Projects for UMass Chemistry 423 Spring 2012-4.

Relevance

Recombinant BMP is used in oral surgery and spinal fusion.

Disease

BMP-7 is involved in chronic kidney disease[2].
