Function

Nucleolin (NCL) is a multifunctional phosphoprotein found in the nucleolus, nucleus and cytoplasm. NCL contains intrinsic DNA and RNA helicase, nucleic-acid-dependent ATPase and self-cleaving activities. NCL binds RNA through its RNA recognition motifs (RBD). It regulates various aspects of DNA and RNA metabolism[1].

Relevance

NCL expression is enhanced on the surface of many different types of cancer cells and hence is the target of anti-cancer therapies[2]. NCL is a specific marker of angiogenic endothelial cells in tumor vessels[3].
