Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) is an flavoenzyme, encoded in the MAOA gene on the X chromosome, present throughout the brain, central nervous system, and stomach and expressed on the outer surface of the mitochondrial membrane. Two isoforms of this enzyme are expressed in the same region, MAO-A and MAO-B, and both are responsible for the oxidative deamination of various neurotransmitters and dietary amines. More specifically, MAO-A oxidizes serotonin, epinephrine, and norepinephrine; while MAO-B oxidizes phenylethylamine and benzylamine. Both isoforms oxidize dopamine, tyramine, and N,N-dimethyltryptamine.
