Structural highlights
Function[ISCS2_ARCFU] Catalyzes the removal of elemental sulfur from cysteine to produce alanine (By similarity). [O34393_ARCFU] A scaffold on which IscS assembles Fe-S clusters. Subsequently gives the nascent cluster to other proteins. It is likely that Fe-S cluster coordination is flexible as the role of this complex is to build and then hand off Fe-S clusters (By similarity). Publication Abstract from PubMedThe center of attention: IscS cysteine desulfurases and IscU scaffolds are involved in biological iron-sulfur cluster assembly. The X-ray structure of an anaerobically produced, mutated (Fe(2) S(2) -(IscS-IscU(D35A) ))(2) complex reveals a cluster coordinated by three IscU cysteines and the IscS active cysteine. In air-exposed crystals the cluster is oxidized to an Fe(2) S-S center; D35 is essential for complex dissociation.
