Adrenodoxin reductase (AR) is the first enzyme in the mitochondrial P450 systems that are expressed in tissues that synthesize steroids.<ref name="HI-review">PMID:22217824</ref> AR is an FAD containing flavoprotein that receives two electrons from NADPH and transfers them one at time to adrenodoxin that is an iron sulfur protein. Reduced adrenodoxin in turn reduces mitochondrial P450s that catalyze essential steps in the biosynthesis of steroids, such as pregnenolone, cortisol, aldosterone and sex steroids.<ref name="HI-review" /> | |||
