FunctionFurin or proprotein convertase furin or dibasic-processing enzyme or paired basic amino acid residue-cleaving enzyme or PACE is a member of the proprotein convertase family and promotes the proteoplytic maturation of proproteins. Furin cleaves precursor proteins at their paired basic amino acid processing sites[1]. RelevanceHigh furin activity promotes the malignant phenotype of cancer cells in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, breast cancer and [2]. Furin has a role in atherosclerosis[3]. The new coronavirus SARS-CoV19 genome sequence shows a furin-like cleavage site in the spike protein. This cleavage site has potential implications in the development of antivirals[4]. See SARS-CoV-2 protein S priming by furin, an animation.
