Caspases are proteases critical to apoptosis. Apoptosis can be initiated through either an intrinsic or extrinsic pathway.
Caspase-6 has been found to have a critical role in neurodegeneration diseases like Alzheimer's and Huntington. The experimental evidence is based on transgenic mice as well as in vitro studies.
