Function

Survivin or apoptosis inhibitor 4 or baculoviral IAP repeat-containing protein 5 (IAP4) plays a dual role. It inhibits caspase activation and thus it inhibits apoptosis and promotes cell proliferation[1]. Survivin is part of the chromosomal passanger complex (CPC) which includes also Borealin and INCENP [2].

Disease

IAP4 is found in human cancer cells[3]. and can serve as a cancer marker and as a target for chemotherapy[4].

Structure of human survivin dimer (magenta and green) complex with histone H3 peptide (cyan) and Zn+2 ion (grey) (PDB code 3uig).
